Posted by F&S

This past weekend, we Frenchies and G.K. went to Brooklyn Bridge Park with Uncle Carlos.? This is where the fantastic Jane's Carousel is located.? If you love riding on carousels, as we do, this one can't be beat!

Well, here we are at Jane's Carousel, located in the Dumbo section of Brooklyn, New York. This completely restored historic carousel was made by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company in 1922.

The carousel sits on the East River in Brooklyn Bridge Park, between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges, housed in a spectacular acrylic pavilion, designed by French architect, Jean Nouvel.

It was originally owned by Jane and David Walentas, the prominent Brooklyn developer. Jane is an artist and she did most of the painstaking restoration work herself, before gifting it to the people of New York City.

I think we should go for a little ride on the carousel.

Hoist me up, Uncle Carlos!

Whoa! Riding this horse going up and down is a bit hair-raising!

Carlos, I think I see a better seat for me.

Yes, now this is more like it. Even though there are 48 exquisitely carved and painted horses, I prefer riding in one of the wonderful chariots.

Sharkey, did you know that this carousel was nearly destroyed in Hurricane Sandy? The river water rose so high that it completely surrounded the pavilion.

The owners watched from their nearby apartment in horror as waves crashed against it.

The water actually covered the floor of the carousel and all of the electronics beneath.

Miraculously, and a very good thing for all of those who love it, Jane's Carousel dried up nicely and was up and running lickity split!
