Confessions of a Craft Supply Junkie - Zanaree

Hello, my name is Happysuz and I?m addicted to buying craft supplies.

My latest splurge?? I was at one of our local craft stores this week to buy school supplies and to look at some alcohol markers.? I purchased some online art classes for Spygirl and they Spectrum Noir markers_edited-1suggested getting good, artist quality markers.? I had been wanting to try Copic markers, but am not willing to pay the high price for them. So I figured I?d try a less expensive brand and get a set that Spygirl and I could share.

My craft store was out of the usual brand. I almost gave up and went home to order some on Amazon when I spotted a display in the stamp section.? They were carrying a new brand (well, new for them) of alcohol pens called Spectrum Noir.? They were 50% off!! ? There were 12 packs of 6 pens each that you could buy.? Each pack in a different color family.? I got 10 packs of my most used colors (because, you know, buying 12 packs would be excessive. LOL) and went home very happy.

75th birthday cardI used them to color the flower and the 75 numbers on this card I made for my aunt.? They blend nicely and color great!? I love that you can make thinks darker or lighter like with crayons.

I have signed Spygirl up for a series of art classes with Thrive Art Online.? I want to learn to draw also, so I thought I?d do them with her.? I?ll post how those classes go separately.

I spent way too much money on markers, but it was such a great deal.? I?m very happy with my purchase and they were a fraction of the cost of a much smaller collection of Copic or even Prismacolor.

Stay tuned to see our creations from our Thrive Art Online drawing class.

Have a creative weekend!

Smartphone cradle, app detect toxins, bacteria

(AP) ? Afraid there may be peanuts or other allergens hiding in that cookie? Thanks to a cradle and app that turn your smartphone into a handheld biosensor, you may soon be able to run on-the-spot tests for food safety, environmental toxins, medical diagnostics and more.

The handheld biosensor was developed by researchers at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. A series of lenses and filters in the cradle mirror those found in larger, more expensive laboratory devices. Together, the cradle and app transform a smartphone into a tool that can detect toxins and bacteria, spot water contamination and identify allergens in food.

Kenny Long, a graduate researcher at the university, says the team was able to make the smartphone even smarter with modifications to the cellphone camera.

Ask Engadget: best retro gaming / homebrew machine?

Ask Engadget: best outdoor TV?

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, then here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is from Brady, who just wants to play NBA Jam, dammit. If you're looking to ask one of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

"Hey, I used to be really into the homebrew and homemade software communities, but times changed and I fell out of the scene. Now I'd like to get back into it, and would love a new device that'll let me play all of these old-school games without having to chop and change -- letting me swap between titles like Mario Kart 64 and NBA Jam without any effort. There are so many new options, from buying an OUYA through to snagging a new PC, so what's my best (and cheapest) bet? Plus, anything that can take a wireless controller is a big plus. Thanks!"

Well, we're thinking that if you're prepared to get your hands a little dirty, the OUYA can be turned into an Android-based emulator thanks to its hacking-friendly setup. If that's a bit too rich for your bones, however, you can set up EmulationStation on a Raspberry Pi which will let you run a wide variety of consoles from the same piece of hardware. Still, let's turn this question over to the Engadgeteers for them to share their experiences.

With video: Commissioner Roger Goodell says NFL 'proud to have' Browns' Jimmy Haslam as owner - Cleveland Browns - Ohio

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell made it clear today that, for now, the league will continue to stand by Browns owner Jimmy Haslam amid a federal investigation into a fraud scheme orchestrated by Pilot Flying J, the Knoxville, Tenn.-based truck-stop empire run by Haslam and owned by his family.

?Jimmy Haslam is a man of great integrity,? said Goodell, who made an appearance at the Browns? headquarters to promote safety at a ?Heads Up Football? youth skills clinic. ?We're proud to have him as an owner in the NFL and think he's going to be a great owner for the Cleveland Browns and their fans here.

?He's as disappointed as anybody in what happened at Pilot J and he's working hard to fix it and correct those issues, both from a structural standpoint and to make amends. He's kept me very much involved. I think ... as he tells me I was one of his first calls to inform me what was happening after he learned about it, and he's been great at keeping us informed.?

The FBI and Internal Revenue Service raided the headquarters of Pilot Flying J April 15, and an affidavit made public days later alleged that Haslam had knowledge of fuel rebate fraud that cheated trucking-company customers out of millions of dollars. So far, seven former Pilot Flying J employees have pleaded guilty to federal charges.

Goodell said Haslam, the CEO of Pilot Flying J, has told him privately what he has maintained publicly ? that he didn?t know about the fraud scheme until the FBI released its affidavit.

?Yes, absolutely [I asked him if he knew about the fraud],? Goodell said. ?And he?s been very clear that he?s had no knowledge of that, and he?s been clear publicly and clear with you all.?

In addition to the criminal investigation, about 20 trucking companies have filed civil lawsuits against Pilot Flying J. Eight of them have agreed to a settlement, and Haslam has sent checks to several other companies in an effort to make restitution.

?He?s been very proactive,? Goodell said. ?He?s made numerous statements about it. I think he?s taken responsibility for it. He?s spoken up. As I said before, he?s a man of integrity. This company has meant a lot to him and his family, and he?s more determined than ever to make it right.?

Some question whether Haslam?s finances could be drained enough to force him to sell the team, which he bought from Randy Lerner last year for about $1 billion.

When training camp opened to the public July 25, Haslam tried to alleviate concerns that he?ll be forced to sell the Browns. Haslam, who's attending practice today, insisted there are no cash flow issues and he?s optimistic about the outcome of the investigation.

?The fans should not worry,? Haslam said. ?Our family is going to own this asset for a long, long time.?

Goodell said he has no reason to doubt Haslam?s hopeful attitude about the outcome of the probe.

?You know, most of my reports are coming from Jimmy, and he shares everything else, and I have every reason to believe him,? Goodell said. ?We have not been given anything that would be inconsistent with that.?

Goodell repeatedly sidestepped questions about what the league?s course of action would be in the event Haslam is indicted.

?We?re not going to play the hypothetical game,? Goodell said. ?Right now he?s addressing the issues. We?re confident he?s going to deal with it properly.?

At what point would the league become more involved?

?Right now, this is an issue where he?s had some people in his organization that have obviously not conducted themselves in a way that?s consistent with what he wants,? Goodell said. ?He?s fixing it, and he?s got to do that. Those things happen in big organizations.

?Jimmy is more disappointed than anybody. But I don?t think it?s a matter for us at this moment.?

Goodell was asked if owners accused of crimes would be disciplined similarly to players accused of crimes.

?We actually hold ownership to a higher standard and management,? Goodell said. ?And I think we?ve proven that in what we?ve done. It?s not just accused. As you know, in our policy, oftentimes we let the criminal process unfold because you need to do that to find out the real facts. Sometimes we don?t have all the facts, and we need to do that. What we look at is multiple offenders. As you know, that?s a real focus for us.?

The league?s owners unanimously approved Haslam?s purchase of the Browns in October after the NFL's finance committee also gave its blessing. The FBI has been investigating Pilot Flying J since May 2011.

Goodell, though, defended the league?s vetting process, insisting it wasn?t flawed.

?No, I don?t think [it was flawed],? Goodell said. ?This was a surprise to [Haslam] and to his senior level management. From that standpoint, I don?t think he was aware of it, and I don?t know anyway we could have been aware of it. It was not disclosed to us.?

Haslam bought a minority stake in the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2008, so the league examined him then. However, Goodell said the NFL?s vetting of Haslam before his purchase of the Browns was not any less thorough than usual.

?No, we go through the same process on any circumstance,? Goodell said. ?When you?re going through a controlling ownership position, that?s a big step up so we don?t just pass that off. We do the same vetting process. Obviously he knows people in the league after being an owner, so there were certain aspects of that which were easier. But we didn?t short-circuit anything.?

Goodell conceded the scandal is not ideal for the Browns or the league.

?You never want to see this kind of thing happen, particularly to a partner in the league,? Goodell said. ?So obviously his partners care a great deal about him, and as a partner they want to see him getting off to a good start. This is not what anybody intended, not anybody anticipated, but he?s a man that I think everyone truly respects in the NFL.?

But Goodell shot down the idea that the probe will distract the Browns.

?I don?t believe it?s distracting anybody in that building, and that?s what really matters at the end of the day,? Goodell said. ?And Jimmy obviously is focused on that, but he?s got a lot of great people that he hired to do the job. He always intended to stay involved with Pilot J.?

Goodell also expressed confidence that Haslam can still prove to be the man who delivers a winner to Cleveland.

?I think Jimmy Haslam came into this with a mindset that he was going to do everything possible to get this franchise turned around in a positive direction and a team that this community will be proud of, not just in any single year, but consistently and to create a winner,? Goodell said. ?And he?s brought in great talent. He?s brought in great people. He set the organization obviously in a different direction. I think that?s all positive and good for the fans here and ultimately good for the NFL.?

London festival organizers announced Thursday that the Paul Greengrass-directed movie will open its 57th edition on Oct. 9.

"Captain Phillips" is based on the true story of Richard Phillips, commanding officer of the Maersk Alabama, a container ship that was hijacked by Somali pirates in 2009. The film's script was adapted from the 2010 book, "A Captain's Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea" by Richard Phillips with Stephan Talty.

Phillips offered himself as a hostage to the pirates in exchange for the freedom of his crew and ship.

The London Film Festival runs Oct. 9-20.

"Captain Phillips" will also open the New York Film Festival on Sept. 27 and the Tokyo International Film festival on Oct. 17. The film opens in U.S. theaters on Oct. 11.

Fostering College Dreams for Kids in Foster Care | UConn Today

Making new friends didn?t come easily to ?Kate.? She kept to herself. She didn?t trust people. But that changed when she came to UConn?s new First Star Academy, a residential summer program for high school students in foster care.

?They?re like family to me now,? the high-school junior from New Haven says of her classmates.

Kate* is one of 19 foster kids from across the state taking part in the program. For four weeks starting on July 7, they have lived on the Storrs campus ? forming close bonds, earning college credits, and perhaps most importantly, learning that college is not beyond their reach.

Appalling statistics

College graduation rates for foster kids are ?horrifically low,? according to Preston Britner, professor of human development and family studies and a member of the Academy development team. Some studies put the figure at less than 3 percent nationally. Foster children also experience disproportionately higher drop-out rates, homelessness, and other social ills, Britner adds.

Brett Rayford, director of Adolescent and Juvenile Justice Services for the state Department of Children and Families (DCF), says a college education is a ?game changer? for many kids who have experienced abuse and neglect. ?We believe we?re being good parents by educating our children so they can take care of themselves,? he says. DCF is paying the lion?s share of costs for the First Star program. Substantial additional funding comes from the University, private donors, and corporate support, including a grant from the LEGO Children?s Fund.

First Star prepares students for higher education by giving them a taste of college life in a safe, supportive, and healthy environment. Students live in a dorm, take summer courses, and participate in self-exploratory and recreational activities while working with a network of caring mentors, some of whom are products of the foster-care system themselves.

?Many times school personnel don?t have high expectations of these kids because of their past situation in life,? says program director Susana Ulloa. ?Our goal is to show them that they do belong on a college campus.?

Adds vice provost for academic affairs Sally Reis, who was instrumental in getting UConn?s First Star program off the ground: ?We want to give a start to kids who, through no fault of their own, have had a rougher road.?

Participants are selected by their DCF social workers, Reis explains. ?We?re looking for students in the top 20 percent of their high school class,? she says, ?kids with the interest and motivation to go to college.?

?A breakthrough for a lot of kids?

One of those kids is ?Dale,? a high-school freshman from Hartford. He says First Star is helping him move forward in life and express himself emotionally. ?It kind of pushes back my past,? he shares. ?It?s been a breakthrough for a lot of kids.?

It was for Kate, who says the most important thing the program has taught her is to accept other people. ?We?re all the same,? she has learned, ?we just have different stories.?

Residence hall director Johanny Baez ?12 (CLAS), who was in DCF care herself until she graduated from UConn, has enjoyed watching the changes in the students. They came in quiet, and afraid to speak or smile, she says. ?Now they?re like this,? she says, crossing one finger over the next.

In addition to taking classes in subjects like English, math, and science, the students also learn life skills, including how to prepare for an interview and how to manage time, stress, and money. They go on college visits and weekend field trips to fun places like Golf Land in Vernon. They also get their own video cameras to create a digital journal of their experience.

Students enter the Academy in 9th grade and come back each summer until they graduate and are ready to enter college. Because this is the first year, some of the participants are sophomores and juniors. In addition to the summer component, the program provides regular contact and support during the academic year.

?This could be a big jump start towards college for any kid in DCF,? says ?Jayden,? a sophomore honors student from Stamford, who plans to earn nine college credits (three per year) through First Star by the time he graduates from high school.

Why UConn?

The Academy concept was developed by UConn alumna Kathleen Reardon ?71 (ED), Distinguished Fellow and founding board member of the national First Star organization. It grew out of her book Childhood Denied, written with husband Christopher Noblet, also a UConn alum and author of the UConn Academy?s business plan.

A former UConn faculty member, Reardon is now a business professor at the University of Southern California Marshall School. She has been instrumental in launching several First Star Academies, including the initial one at the University of California, Los Angeles, in 2011. Because of her history with UConn, Reardon says she was eager to start an Academy here, and approached UConn President Susan Herbst with the idea.

?Higher education is all about access to opportunity, and we couldn?t feel more strongly about that at UConn,? Herbst says. ?Establishing the First Star Academy allows UConn to provide life-changing opportunities to these deserving teens. The perseverance they?ve developed by necessity as children in the foster system is exactly the kind of attribute that will help them thrive in college careers, given the right supports and resources to make the transition. We?re excited to play a role in that through the UConn First Star Academy, and we?re grateful to the state Department of Children and Families for supporting this immensely important initiative.?

UConn is uniquely qualified to host a First Star Academy, points out Maria Martinez, assistant vice provost of the Institute for Student Success. Martinez directs the Center for Academic Programs, which has a long history of running summer residential programs for first-generation, low-income, underrepresented students.

Rayford concurs. With its 40-plus year history of success, UConn is in the top echelon of institutions in terms of preparing students for college, he says. That, combined with DCF?s post-secondary education program ? which last year funded college or vocational school for more than 600 young people in its care ? makes this ?a perfect marriage,? he says.

?We want to become the model to follow,? Martinez insists.

According to Reardon, UConn is well on the way. ?Given UConn?s deep experience working with underserved students, this could be our model program,? she says. ?I?m very impressed by the students and by the work the staff is doing. You have exceeded my vision,? she told students and staff during a recent visit.

The young participants share Reardon?s regard for the program, and especially the staff.

?The TCs [tutor/counselors] are very inspiring,? says Kate. ?They?re there when you need them. They help you. They give you great advice. I feel like they?re my big brothers and sisters.?

?Emily,? a high-school sophomore from Groton, agrees. ?They didn?t have to come here for the summer and do this for us,? she says. ?They changed my life. This whole program changed my life.?

* The names of program participants have been changed to protect their identities.

Snowden's future cloudy as FSB and FBI meet about his status

The two security agencies may be discussing Russian measures to prevent further Snowden leaks.

By Fred Weir,?Correspondent / July 26, 2013

Russian lawyer Anatoly Kucherena speaks to the media after visiting former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden at Sheremetyevo airport outside Moscow Wednesday. The Kremlin announced today that FSB officials are in discussions with the FBI over Mr. Snowden, who is still awaiting paperwork that would allow him to leave the airport.

The mystery over what will happen with former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden's on-again, off-again attempt to find refuge in Russia deepened Friday when the Kremlin suddenly announced that Russia's FSB security service was holding talks with representatives of the FBI about his case.

Russian President Vladimir Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the announcement, which was reported by Russian news agencies. He added that the Kremlin is not involved in the discussions and insisted it would not lead to Mr. Snowden's extradition to the US to face charges of espionage and theft of government property over his mass leaks of alleged NSA secrets to the global media.

Reading between the lines of Mr. Peskov's statement, it appears possible that FSB experts are explaining to their FBI counterparts what measures they will take to prevent Snowden from doing further damage to US interests if he is granted some sort of temporary asylum in Russia.

"The president has demonstrated strong resolve to prevent [Snowden from doing anything to harm the US]. I have no doubts this will be so indeed, however the situation may develop further," the independent Interfax agency quoted Peskov as saying.

Asked whether Mr. Putin's oft-repeated stance that Russia will not extradite Snowden to the US has been altered, Peskov replied: "We have never surrendered anyone and we will never do so in the future."

In recent days, US Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul has suggested in various tweets on the subject that perhaps Russia should simply "return" Snowden to the US, without calling it "extradition" ? for which the US and Russia have no mutual treaty.

"The U.S. is not asking for 'extradition', but simply the return of Mr. Snowden. We have sent many people back to Russia," the official ITAR-Tass agency quoted Mr. McFaul as saying Thursday.

According to the English-language Moscow Times, US Secretary of State John Kerry told his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov at a recent meeting that the US "returned" 1,754 individuals over to Russia between 2007 to 2012 and was ready to hand over 101 more. However, the report says, Mr. Kerry was unable to supply a list of those people when pressed by the Russians.

Washington has been cranking up the pressure on Russia to turn Snowden over to face trial in the US, including a unanimous decision Thursday in the US Senate's Appropriations Committee to impose sanctions on Russia or any other country that harbors Snowden.

Another tack the US has taken is to address oft-repeated Russian concerns that Snowden might face the death penalty, or be tortured, if he is sent back to the US. It's a theme his lawyer has made much of in arguing that Snowden ought to be granted political asylum in Russia.

On Friday, US Attorney General Eric Holder released a letter sent to his Russian counterpart last Tuesday, assuring him that those claims are baseless.

"The United States will not seek the death penalty for Mr. Snowden should he return to the United States. The charges he faces do not carry that possibility, and the United States would not seek the death penalty even if Mr. Snowden were charged with additional, death penalty-eligible crimes," the letter said.

"Mr. Snowden will not be tortured. Torture is unlawful in the United States," it added.

Snowden has been stranded in the vast transit zone of Sheremetyevo airport for over a month, since arriving in Russia ? uninvited, according to Russian officials ? aboard a regular Aeroflot flight from Hong Kong on June 23. He apparently had an onward ticket to Cuba the next day, but failed to use it for reasons that remain completely unknown.

His presence in Sheremetyevo has deeply aggravated US-Russia relations, but also set up conflicts within Russia officialdom over how to deal with someone who is not a traditional defector and whose main supporters in Russia are human rights organizations with which the Kremlin is frequently at odds.

Snowden's Kremlin-connected lawyer, Anatoly Kucherena, appeared confident Wednesday when he arrived at Sheremetyevo with a large brown paper bag which he told reporters contained all the paperwork necessary for his client's release from the airport's transit zone, plus a fresh suit of clothing and classical Russian literature by Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Anton Chekhov to help Snowden acclimatize to his new home.

But after several hours it became clear that there was no agreement within Russia's notoriously fractious bureaucracy about letting Snowden walk free in Moscow.

"I hope that this situation will be resolved in the nearest future. This is the first time Russia is facing such a situation, and this issue of course requires time for the immigration workers," Mr. Kucherena told journalists.

Vladimir Volokh, former deputy head of the Federal Migration Service and member of the Kremlin's Public Chamber, told Interfax Friday that there was no agreement among various Russian agencies over how to treat Snowden, and he will probably have to stay put in Sheremetyevo until a decision is made.

"He could stay in Sheremetyevo until his legal status is determined. The legislator has set the timeline of up to three months but the procedure could be extended for another three? So he could be in the transit area for up to six months," Mr. Volokh is quoted as saying.

Any clear decision by Putin, of course, would change that situation instantly.

Fox sitcom 'Dads' blasted weeks before its debut

(AP) ? It doesn't debut until next month, but the Fox sitcom "Dads" is already taking heat in early reviews for being crass, sexist and exploiting racial stereotypes.

Facing reporters Thursday, its stars and producers defended the show as focusing on human frailties for the sake of laughs and enlightenment. They vowed to refine it, as needed, as the season unfolds, and asked its audience not to rush to judgment.

"In the pilot (episode) we all noticed some things we'd like to change or tweak moving forward," co-creator Alec Sulkin said at the session of the Television Critics Association. He acknowledged they may have "missed the mark a few times" in the pilot.

"The first six episodes, you're improving your pilot," said Mike Scully, another executive producer whose credits include the once-excoriated "The Simpsons."

"I think you're going to notice a change in the tone and balance," Scully said.

Yet another executive producer of the series is Seth MacFarlane, who wasn't present at the session. His animated comedies, including "Family Guy," have won him popularity as well as criticism for their rawness.

"Dads" centers on two friends, played by Seth Green and Giovanni Ribisi, whose politically incorrect fathers re-enter their lives and disrupt them. The raucous, loose-lipped dads are played by Martin Mull and Peter Riegert.

"Historically, television has been a provocative medium. It's a medium we look at to observe ourselves," said Green, before noting that the show has "some disparaging portraits of white men."

"Dads" premieres Sept. 17.

Pentagon Considers Military Reductions as Part of Budget Cuts

On Wednesday, the Defense Department released a report with a number of worst case scenarios based on cutbacks caused by the sequester?s automatic spending cuts, including reducing the Army to its smallest size since 2001, the Hill reports.

The Pentagon said one scenario under consideration would pare the Army down from 490,00 to between 380,000 and 450,000 troops.

The Marine Corps would be reduced from 182,000 to between 150,00 to 175,000, and the number of aircraft carrier strike groups would fall from 11 to eight or nine.

Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel said that while our fighting forces would retain a significant edge when it comes to the technological aspect of defense, the reduction of boots on the ground would severely hamper our options of involvement.

?This strategic choice would result in a force that would be technologically dominant, but would be much smaller and able to go to fewer places and do fewer things,? Hagel said.

If the troop cuts come to pass, they would make it virtually impossible for the U.S. to wage two wars simultaneously, a significant break from past Pentagon strategy.

Another possible move would keep current troop numbers at their current levels, but end crucial weapons programs designed to replace several aging systems in the Pentagon?s arsenal.

The various reductions would be put in place to anticipate the $500 billion in spending cuts mandated by the sequester over the next decade.

The cuts began in March, and would reduce Pentagon spending by $52 billion next year.

Hagel urged Congress to do whatever it takes to guarantee these doomsday scenarios never see the light of day.

?It is the responsibility of our nation?s leadership to work together to replace the mindless and irresponsible policy of sequestration,? Hagel said.

House Armed Services Committee ranking member Adam Smith, D-Wash., echoed Hagel?s message, saying said that Congress was ?abdicating its constitutional responsibility to responsibly fund the military? by permitting sequestration to continue.

?We are already on a path to significant deficit reductions,? Smith said.

?I am in favor of simply lifting sequestration and ceasing to impose these dramatic costs on our military.?

House Armed Services Committee Chairman Buck McKeon, R-Calif., took a slightly different view of the report, saying it was a ?budget-driven? exercise that didn?t address the underlying strategy issues.

McKeon agreed, however, that the report did drive home the reality that further cuts will ?cause catastrophic readiness shortfalls.?

?We will lose our workforce and ability to recruit and retain the all volunteer force, and our influence around the world will continue to diminish,? McKeon said.

?Our enemies will feel emboldened, and this is precisely what I plan to address with [Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton] Carter tomorrow,? McKeon added, referencing a Thursday hearing on the Pentagon?s review.
