Washington Redskins at Philadelphia Eagles Spread

The Washington Redskins (8-6, 4-3 away) travel to face the Philadelphia Eagles (4-10, 2-5 home) this Sunday in NFC East action. Taking a look at the pro football odds for Week 16, I find Washington as a 4.5-point favorite over Philadelphia and a total set of 44.5 points.

Why Washington Covers

The Redskins have more to play for than the Philadelphia Eagles. They are 8-6 on the season and sit in a three-way tie with Dallas and New York atop the NFC East division. At 4-10, the Eagles have little to play for other than pride the rest of the way.

Washington is playing its best football of the season lately. It has won five straight while going a perfect 5-0 against the spread in its last five games overall. That includes wins over Dallas, New York and Baltimore.

A blowout 31-6 home victory over Philadelphia on November 18th started this streak. The Redskins outgained the Eagles 361-257 for the game in a dominant effort. Robert Griffin III completed 14 of 15 passes for 200 yards and four touchdowns in the win.

Griffin III is questionable to return this week, but even if he can?t go Kirk Cousins has proven he can handle the job. Cousins led Washington to a 38-21 victory at Cleveland last Sunday. He completed 26 of 37 passes for 329 yards with two touchdowns and one interception in the win.

Philadelphia has been giving up points in bunches this season. It is allowing 26.8 points per game on the year, and it has gotten worse as the season has progressed. The Eagles have allowed 26 or more points in seven of their last nine games overall. They?ll be up against a Washington offense that is averaging 27.2 points per game while ranking 4th in the league in total offense at 389.9 yards per game.

The Eagles are 3-10 against the spread in all games this season, including 0-6 against the spread in home games. Philadelphia is 0-7 against the spread in home games after 1 or more consecutive losses over the last 2 seasons. The favorite is 4-0 against the spread in the last 4 days. Washington is 4-1 against the spread in its last 5 meetings in Philadelphia.

Why Philadelphia Covers

There?s no question the oddsmakers realize that the betting public is in love with the Washington Redskins. That?s why they have to give the Eagles a few extra points than maybe they would normally want to just to get even action on both sides. That could mean there is value with the home underdog this week.

This is a division rivalry, and though Philadelphia has little to play for the rest of the way, it should have no problem getting up for Washington. These NFC East games are always played closer to the vest. The Eagles would love nothing more than to play the role of spoiler and knock off the Redskins at home Sunday.

Philadelphia will be the fresher team after having played last Thursday. It led Cincinnati 13-10 in the second half before giving that game away by committing four turnovers in five plays from scrimmage at one point. However, it will now have an extra three days of rest and preparation to get ready for Washington.

This play falls into a system that is 78-37 (67.8%) ATS since 1983. It tells us to bet on underdogs or pick (PHILADELPHIA) ? an average offensive team (18 to 23 PPG) against an excellent offensive team (>=27 PPG), after scoring 14 points or less last game.

Washington is 49-81 against the spread in its last 130 games as a favorite. Philadelphia is 9-0 against the spread in its last 9 games following a blowout home loss by 21 points or more. The Redskins are 11-26-3 against the spread in their last 40 vs. a team with a losing record.
