Burnett: reality can work without being mean

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) ? Mark Burnett says reality TV shows don't have to be mean to work.

The veteran producer of "Survivor" and "The Voice" is working on a new CBS show, "The Job," which premieres on CBS on Feb. 8. It depicts candidates applying for jobs at several companies, and takes viewers through the whole nerve-racking experience.

"I think I've proved in the last few years a kinder approach on television does work," said Burnett, who was brought on to help at "The Job" by series creator Michael Davies. Burnett said Saturday that "The Voice" avoids "ripping people for entertainment value" and has "crushed" Fox competitor "The X Factor" as result.

"The Job" also has no intent to humiliate people, producers said.

The first two episodes feature candidates applying for jobs at the Palm restaurant chain and at Cosmopolitan magazine. Future featured companies include Major League Soccer, Epic Records, Live Nation and the online shopping site Gilt.

Five people are competing for jobs in each show. The twist is that after a decision is made, employers in the same industry sometimes swoop in and claim rejected candidates.

Burnett said it's fun to see the reaction of employers when that happens.

"Everybody wants what somebody else wants," he said. "When you want to buy a car or a house or go somewhere, you think, 'Should I do it?' and then someone will say, 'Oh, someone else is going to buy that.' You suddenly want it even more. It's great to see the playing field leveled."

Beyond the entertainment value, Davies said viewers will get practical advice on how to apply and interview for jobs.

Former CU Buff Jamahl Mosley rising star as NBA assistant coach with Cavaliers

The Cleveland Cavaliers' biggest rising star is second-year point guard Kyrie Irving, but another rising star never got off their bench at the Pepsi Center on Friday night.

Cavaliers assistant coach Jamahl Mosley has gone from being an obscure 1,000-point scorer at the University of Colorado to becoming one of the more respected assistants in the NBA. Three years after leaving his Nuggets position as advance scout and assistant, he has become one of coach Byron Scott's most trusted assistants.

"I love J's energy," Scott said. "He's gaining valuable experience. I've given him the defensive assignment to get us together, which is a tough assignment because of how young we are. But our guys are starting to pick up on it and

starting to understand what we need to do on that end every single night.

"He's a workaholic as well. He's terrific with young players. He's terrific as far as working them out and getting them better. And his X's and O's are great. He was here with a great coach. Being here with George (Karl) helped him tremendously."

The move to Cleveland was a step up for Mosley, a Milwaukee native who played at Colorado from 1997-2001. Scott is known as a coach's coach. He gives his assistants a lot of responsibility.

    Mosley can see the benefits.

"There's a level of confidence there now that just says you know you can," Mosley said. "For me, that's the big thing. I think I've developed a tremendous amount, truly."

He credits Scott, who three years ago took over the major rebuilding job left from the tumultuous departure of LeBron James. In Cleveland, it's all hands on deck. Injuries have sunk the Cavaliers to the second-worst record in the NBA.

"I love him," Mosley said of Scott. "He's been phenomenal. He allows us to voice our opinion. He allows me to take the defense and understand how we structure it. I can't sing his praises enough."

Mosley still follows his alma mater. He bet lunch with fellow former Nuggets assistant Stacey Augmon, now at UNLV, when the Rebels and Buffaloes met in last year's NCAA Tournament. (Augmon paid up.)

Friday, Mosley texted Buffs coach Tad Boyle to congratulate him on Thursday's win over USC.

"I told him, 'You don't need me to tell you, but phenomenal job with things going on up there,' " Mosley said. "He's always so complimentary of the alumni."

Karl praises Irving. Karl reminded the Nuggets that their losses last year included losses to Eastern Conference-bottom feeders Cleveland and Toronto. Cleveland won in Denver 100-99 when Irving scored 10 points in the fourth quarter, including the game-winner.

"He reminds me of a big Chris Paul," Karl said. "He can go anywhere. He loves the big plays, loves the big decisions."

Broncos fan. Karl wore a Broncos orange top before Friday night's game against Cleveland, courtesy of his daughter mentioning Friday's official Broncos Day. Karl will attend Saturday's playoff game at Sports Authority Field at Mile High ? in a warm private suite.

"The coldest I've ever been in a football game was in Cleveland," said Karl, who coached the Cavs from 1984-86. "They had really bad boxes. You had like those plug-in heaters. You had your coats on."

Montreux Jazz Festival founder Claude Nobs dies

GENEVA (AP) ? Claude Nobs, the founder and general manager of the Montreux Jazz Festival, whose passion for music and artistry introduced generations of legendary musicians to international audiences on the Swiss stage, has died. He was 76.

The Jazz Festival said Nobs, a native of Montreux, died Thursday after sustaining injuries from a fall while cross-country skiing in nearby Caux-sur-Montreux on Christmas Eve. He was taken to the hospital and fell into a coma from which he never recovered.

Nobs worked his way from being a chef and director of Montreux's tourism office, where he organized charity concerts, to overseeing one of the most iconic music festivals in the world.

On its website, the festival said Nobs' death came by "surprise as if to remind us once more, that in life as in music, each great performance could be the last one even if the show must go on."

A visit to the New York offices of Atlantic Records led to the first festival in his home city in June 1967, featuring musicians such as Keith Jarrett and Jack DeJohnette.

The festival was an overnight success, building over the decades on Nobs' passion for jazz, as much as his gumption and contacts abroad.

"'And why not?' You would repeatedly ask the same question when we tried to explain why a project would not be feasible," festival officials wrote in an homage to Nobs on the web site that praised his audacity to dream big. "The Montreux Jazz Festival is the ultimate proof of that! But not the only one!"

From that meeting in New York, Nobs went on to gain career-forming introductions to musical greats such as Roberta Flack and Aretha Franklin, who would make her first European tour at his request. The musical acts at the festival also would gradually broaden to include rock and pop.

An early incident involving the rock group Deep Purple, which had come to Montreux to record an album after performing with Frank Zappa, became forever linked with Nobs.

During a fire at Zappa's concert in 1971, Nobs rushed to save several young concert-goers. Deep Purple's hit song, "Smoke on the Water," would memorialize the accident ? Nobs as "Funky Claude" pulling kids to safety.

Two years later, Nobs became director of the Swiss branch of Warner, Elektra and Atlantic, a position that gave him added clout to introduce heavyweights on the Montreux stage.

By the 1990s, he was sharing festival-directing duties with the music producer Quincy Jones and bringing in Miles Davis as an honorary host.

Nobs, whose enthusiasm for greeting musicians at his office and chalet home cemented his standing and boosted the profile of his home, also became known for occasionally taking the stage to play harmonica.

In an interview with Swiss video magazine NVP3D posted on YouTube, Nobs' compared the mix of tradition and creative innovation that he sought at his festivals to the popular Swiss German breakfast dish Bircher Muesli, a combination of rolled oats, fruits, nuts and dairy products.

"Which means it's going to be like a fruit panorama, like a rainbow of different music, and this is what I like about Montreux," he said in the interview, published in June 2012. "To make it really with such a variety of sound, of smell, of views and scene, that it makes it a real experience."

Dark Energy Alternatives to Einstein Are Running Out of Room

Research by University of Arizona astronomy professor Rodger Thompson finds that a popular alternative to Albert Einstein's theory for the acceleration of the expansion of the universe does not fit newly obtained data on a fundamental constant, the proton to electron mass ratio. Thompson's findings, reported Jan. 9 at the American Astronomical Society meeting in Long Beach, Calif., impact our understanding of the universe and point to a new direction for the further study of its accelerating expansion.

To explain the acceleration of the expansion of the universe, astrophysicists have invoked dark energy - a hypothetical form of energy that permeates all of space. A popular theory of dark energy, however, does not fit new results on the value of the proton mass divided by the electron mass in the early universe.

Thompson computed the predicted change in the ratio by the dark energy theory (generally referred to as rolling scalar fields) and found it did not fit the new data.

UA alumnus Brian Schmidt, along with Saul Perlmutter and Adam Reiss, won the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics for showing that the expansion of the universe is accelerating rather than slowing down as previously thought.

The acceleration can be explained by reinstating the "cosmological constant" into Einstein's theory of General Relativity. Einstein originally introduced the term to make the universe stand still. When it was later found that the universe was expanding, Einstein called the cosmological constant "his biggest blunder."

The constant was reinstated with a different value that produces the observed acceleration of the universe's expansion. Physicists trying to calculate the value from known physics, however, get a number more than 10 to the power of 60 (one followed by 60 zeros) too large - a truly astronomical number.

That's when physicists turned to new theories of dark energy to explain the acceleration.

In his research, Thompson put the most popular of those theories to the test, targeting the value of a fundamental constant (not to be confused with the cosmological constant), the mass of the proton divided by the mass of the electron. A fundamental constant is a pure number with no units such as mass or length. The values of the fundamental constants determine the laws of physics. Change the number, and the laws of physics change. Change the fundamental constants by a large amount, and the universe becomes very different from what we observe.

The new physics model of dark energy that Thompson tested predicts that the fundamental constants will change by a small amount. Thompson identified a method of measuring the proton to electron mass ratio in the early universe several years ago, but it is only recently that astronomical instruments became powerful enough to measure the effect. More recently, he determined the exact amount of change that many of the new theories predict.

Last month, a group of European astronomers, using a massive radio telescope in Germany, made the most accurate measurement of the proton-to-electron mass ratio ever accomplished and found that there has been no change in the ratio to one part in 10 million at a time when the universe was about half its current age, around 7 billion years ago.

When Thompson put this new measurement into his calculations, he found that it excluded almost all of the dark energy models using the commonly expected values or parameters. If the parameter space or range of values is equated to a football field, then almost the whole field is out of bounds except for a single 2-inch by 2-inch patch at one corner of the field. In fact, most of the allowed values are not even on the field.

"In effect, the dark energy theories have been playing on the wrong field," Thompson said. "The 2-inch square does contain the area that corresponds to no change in the fundamental constants, and that is exactly where Einstein stands."

Thompson expects that physicists and astronomers studying cosmology will adapt to the new field of play, but for now, "Einstein is in the catbird seat, waiting for everyone else to catch up."
