Brock Lesnar retires from MMA after loss to Alistair Overeem at UFC 141

LAS VEGAS - Brock Lesnar never really adjusted to getting hit for real. Tonight, facing a 263-pound monster in Alistair Overeem, Lesnar bowed out early and then walked away from the sport.

The same old bugaboo - his inability to absorb punches - reared its ugly head. Overeem targeted Lesnar's body with knees and kicks, got the big man to drop and cover up. It was all over in less than two and a half minutes in the main event of UFC 141 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

So is Lesnar's run in MMA. The former star of pro wrestling told the crowd at the MGM Grand Garden Arena that he was finished fighting in the Octagon.

"I want to thank everyone, the Fertittas and Dana White," Lesnar told UFC analyst Joe Rogan. "I promised my wife and kids that if I won this fight, the fight against Junior [dos Santos] would be my last. If I lost tonight, this would be my last."

Overeem, a veteran of 47 MMA fights coming in, broke Lesnar's spirit early by thwarting a takedown attempt and battering his body repeatedly. The win gets him the next? heavyweight title shot against Junior dos Santos sometime in 2012.

"My hats off to Alistair Overeem. I want to take my hat off to all my training partners, my entire family," said Lesnar. "I've really had a difficult time with my disease. I'm officially retired tonight. This was the last time you'll see me in the Octagon."

Lesnar missed the last 15 months fighting a battle against diverticulitis. The intestinal ailment and subsequent surgery had him losing 40 pounds at one point. Lesnar was first diagnosed in Oct. of 2009. He went without surgery and tried to return a year later. He lost his UFC heavyweight title to Cain Velasquez at UFC 121. More alarming than the one-sided loss was the way Lesnar turned and ran away from punches after he was nailed a few times by Velasquez.

Brock Lesnar retires from MMA after loss to Alistair Overeem at UFC 141

Velasquez is a big puncher, but Overeem is in a different class. An experience kickboxer, the 263-pound Overeem hits like a Mack truck. A few knees early tonight really rocked Lesnar and put him on his heels. He seemed tentative in going for the takedown. Lesnar, a wrestler by trade, only attempted one single-leg takedown 50 seconds into the fight. After that, he chose to stand and box with Overeem. It was a path to disaster.

Overeem (36-11-1, 1-0 UFC) drilled Lesnar on his right side with a nasty left kick. Lesnar had a delayed reaction, grabbed at his side and went down to a knee. Overeem charged forward and threw 11 unanswered punches as Lesnar covered up. The final right crushed Lesnar to the body. That's when the ref stepped in.

This was the UFC debut for Overeem, who's fought all over the world. The giant Dutchman spent most of his career fighting in Japan as a 205-pounder. In 2007, he decided to add bulk to his 6-foot-5 frame. The change has been shocking. He's stormed to eight straight wins in the big boy division, with seven of them coming via first round finishes.

Why Warmer Water Leads to Male Offspring -- If You're a Fish (Time.com)

To a list that includes extreme weather patterns and disappearing polar bears, you can add another dispiriting effect of climate change: too many males. Three years ago, Francesc Piferrer and other scientists working at Barcelona's Institute of Marine Sciences proved that rising water temperatures caused some species of fish to produce a disproportionate ratio of males to females. Now, Piferrer and his team have gone on to discover something of a mechanism behind that imbalance.

Most fish species don't have the x and y chromosomes that differentiate the sexes in humans. In fact, at least 40 species of fish -- as well as many reptiles -- are more dependent on temperature than genes when it comes to separating the boys from the girls. In these TSD ( temperature-dependent sex determination) species, the sex of offspring is fixed by temperatures experienced during embryonic development. In the 2008 study, Piferrer's team showed that in a species like the Atlantic silverside, a water temperature increase of 4 degrees Celsius could result in a population that was 98% male. (See "The End of the Line.")

But until now, no one has been able to explain how exactly that process works. "One of the questions that came out of that earlier study," says Piferrer, "was how can temperature affect the developmental fate of the gonads when they're not even formed yet?"

In their new study, published December 29 in the scientific journal Public Library of Science, Piferrer and his co-authors argue they've found at least a partial answer: epigenetics. The word refers to inheritable changes in gene activity that are caused by things other than alterations to the DNA sequence. "Think of it like a book," explains Piferrer. "The words that are printed in the book are the DNA. The ones you write in pencil in the margins are epigenetic."

In the case of the European sea bass that the team studied, an epigenetic process called DNA methylation suppresses the enzyme that converts male hormones into female ones -- a conversion necessary for the formation of ovaries in non-mammal vertebrates. And DNA methylation, it turns out, is susceptible to temperature. Raise water temperature, and methylation increases, which means that more of that critical enzyme (called aromatase) is suppressed. And that means fewer females. (See "Oily: How a San Francisco Oil Spill Took Its Toll on Fish.")

The scientists saw the greatest impact during the first 20 days of a fish's life, an embryonic stage that comes before gonads develop. Exposed to a three or four degree increase in water temperature during that time, the normal 50/50 ratio between the sexes skewed 80% male. "What this shows," says Piferrer, "is that conditions at the very beginning of life continue to have important effects through the animal's life."

It also helps explain the heavily male populations of many fish farms. Sea bass in the wild generally spawn in water that is 13-17 degrees. But most hatcheries keep sea bass larvae in 21-degree water.

More sobering are the potential effects in the wild. The International Panel on Climate Control's predicts that sea water temperatures will rise at least 1.5 degrees in this century, a rise that, by Piferrer's calculations, is enough to alter sex ratios in some populations. Some populations of Canary rockfish are already showing more males than females. Although the wide number of variables has so far prevented scientists in those cases from pinpointing a single cause for the imbalance, Scott Heppell, a fish biologist at Oregon State University notes, "The data shows a skew toward males, and the modeling shows that if this skew is real, then the population is in more trouble." ( See "Brain Food: Eating Fish May Lower Your Risk of Alzheimer's.")

Migration and other forms of adaptation may protect TSD species from extinction. And Heppell notes that, by itself, a sex ratio imbalance is less worrying than other climate change-induced threats to the seas. The cumulative effects, however, are another story.

"Say that some species are spawning at slightly the wrong time so their offspring can't find food. And their metabolisms are running ever so slightly higher because of increased temperatures. And then you add in this DNA methylation so you get a skewed sex ratio," says Heppell. "It adds up. It's death by a thousand cuts."

Old Microsoft patent details gaming console with DVR functionality ...

Can you imagine the original Xbox 360, with its 20GB hard drive, being used as a DVR? We really can't see it working, but in January of 2007 Microsoft was down with the idea.

Patents discovered by Tom's Guide detail plans for a gaming console similar to the Xbox 360 with a "digital video recorder (DVR) application running alongside a television client component." In the alternate reality where Microsoft actually followed through with this patent, the console in question would be able to directly record content even when playing games or if "the gaming console is turned off."

Of course today the Xbox 360 can stream content in a number of ways, but does not allow for direct recording to the hard drive. Now that the ceiling for storage has been raised on the platform we'd be on board with such functionality, but if this languishing patent is any indication Microsoft is fine with the current state of things.

'Fresh Prince' star lashes out at Will Smith

Warner Bros./ Courtesy: Everett Collection

Former "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" actress Janet Hubert recently lashed out Will Smith (seen above in a 1996 photo from the show).

By Ree Hines

Watch out, Will. Aunt Viv is mad!

If anyone was holding out hope that the original cast of 1990s TV hit "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" might one day reunite, despite the fact that former lead Will Smith is strictly A-list nowadays, it's time to give up the dream. According to actress Janet Hubert, who played family matriarch Vivian Banks, there's no way it could ever happen.

Hubert has sworn off sharing any screen ? big or small ? with Smith again.

"There will never be a reunion ... as I will never do anything with an a--hole like Will Smith," Hubert recently told TMZ.

Yikes! Why the bad blood? Well, it seems Hubert still blames Smith for her early ouster from "Fresh Prince" in 1993, three years into the show's run.

"He is still an egomaniac and has not grown up," she explained after a recent off-screen?reunion of some other cast members?sparked new rumors of a "Fresh Prince" return. "This constant reunion thing will never ever happen in my lifetime unless there is an apology, which he doesn't know the word."

For his part, Smith has long denied having anything to do with Hubert's departure from the sitcom.

"That wasn?t me," he told Ebony magazine in a 1996 interview. "Janet (Hubert) was an incredible actress. She brought so much spirit and fun and warmth to 'The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.' She made that set a home. She was really special. Of course, there was pain in her not returning to the show and all that, but then there was the thing that she thought it was me. That kind of irritated me a little bit, but people will make their own beds, and they are going to have to sleep in them. I didn?t have anything to do with it. She just never believed that. I think the show suffered with the loss of Janet."

Who do you believe in the not-so-fresh "Fresh Prince" battle? Are you disappointed that a reunion won't happen? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

GadgetTrak launches CameraTrace: Photo thieves beware (Digital Trends)

camertracerYou may remember hearing about photographer John Heller?s ordeal recovering his $9,000 worth of camera gear this summer. The thieves unwittingly uploaded photos taken with the stolen equipment, including a Nikon D3, to sites popular photo sharing platforms?which is just what GadgetTrak wanted.

The site was then testing a beta application that would scan photo-sharing sites like Flickr and 500px for images uploaded from potentially stolen equipment. The meta-data on these images reveals camera serial numbers, so owners missing their gear can easily identify if it?s theirs or not.

It was a dream come true for Heller, and now GadgetTrak is releasing the technology to consumers. Called CameraTrace, the service basically creates an identity for your camera so that in the cause it?s taken it can easily search the worldwide Web for any image taken with the device. Users pay a one-time $10 fee per camera, which comes with a lost-and-found tag that good Samaritans can use to trace back to owners who have merely misplaced their cameras.

In the case your device has been stolen, however, you will use the system to file a police report. GadgetTrak will even take up your case and speak with local enforcement if you choose. Basically you?ll have a helping hand through the painstaking process of getting your equipment back.

According to GadgetTrak, the CPUsage platform behind CameraTrace is able to thoroughly asses where your device has gone via uploaded images. It?s also allegedly able to identify more than 300 different ?high-end camera models? from various brand names.

Serious photographers will get an added benefit from using CameraTrace. The site also protects your copyrighted photos via its image monitoring service, which scans social sites to see if anyone out there is using your work without permissions?and pointing you in their direction.

Compared to how much photographers are willing to shell out on their gear, $10 is chump change. And given the popularity of the photo-sharing sites, this could be a very effective form of insurance.?

Turkey and France trade accusations of genocidal history

Turkey and France tussle over genocide bill:?Turkey, angered by a French bill forbidding denial of the mass killings of Armenians by Ottoman Turks as genocide, accused France of committing genocide during its occupation of Algeria.

Turkey responded to French genocide allegations with a charge of its own Friday, accusing France of committing genocide during its colonial occupation of Algeria.

French lawmakers passed a bill Thursday making it a crime to deny that the mass killings of Armenians by Ottoman Turks constitute genocide.

The deepening acrimony between two strategic allies and trading partners could have repercussions far beyond the settling of accounts over some of the bloodiest episodes of the past century.

Turkey was already frustrated by French opposition to its stalled European Union bid, and hopes for Western-backed rapprochement between Turkey and Armenia seem ever more distant ahead of 2015, the 100th anniversary of the Armenian killings.

The bill strikes at the heart of national honor in Turkey, which maintains there was no systematic campaign to kill Armenians and that many Turks also died during the chaotic disintegration of the Ottoman Empire.

The French bill still needs Senate approval, but after it passed the lower house, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan halted bilateral political and economic contacts, suspended military cooperation, and ordered his country's ambassador home for consultations.

Turkey and France worked closely together during NATO's operation against Libyan dictator Muammar Qaddafi, and had been coordinating policy on Syria and Afghanistan.

"What the French did in Algeria was genocide," Mr. Erdogan said Friday in a heavily personal speech, laced with criticism of French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

He alleged that beginning in 1945, about 15 percent of the population of Algeria was massacred by the French. He also said Algerians were burned in ovens.

"They were mercilessly martyred," he said.

Erdogan appeared to be referring to allegations that the French burned the dead in ovens after a 1945 uprising that began in the Algerian town of Setif. Algerians say some 45,000 people may have died. French figures say up to 20,000.

Clarke asks his team to play fair against India

Argentina News.Net
Saturday 24th December, 2011 (IANS)

Australian captain Michael Clarke has asked his teammates to play fair against India in the four-Test series starting Monday with the Boxing Day Test here, and warned of punishment if they don't.

Clarke said he wanted to avoid any bad blood between the two teams.

'Both teams understand where we are at, the relationship between the Australia team and the India team could not be stronger. We all understand there is a line you can go to but there is a line you can't cross,' Clarke told reporters in the pre-match press conference here at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

'I can guarantee you that nobody in the Australian team will cross that and if they do, there will be punishments from the ICC but also from Cricket Australia,' he sternly added.

'We will be doing everything in our power to play some really competitive, tough cricket. But we understand and acknowledge that we won't cross that line.'

India's previous tour Down Under four years ago was marred by controversies with the 'monkeygate' fiasco between Harbhajan Singh and Andrew Symonds taking the centre stage.

Symonds and Singh have since happily played alongside each other in the Indian Premier League. Symonds has retired from international cricket and Singh wasn't selected for the current series.

'The relationship between the Australian players and the Indian players is very good and will continue to be that way,' Clarke said.

'Both teams have a lot to play for. It has always been very competitive on the field but off the field both teams get on very well.'

Talking about the great Sachin Tendulkar, Clarke hoped that the master blaster scores his much-awaited 100th hundred in his next series.

'Tendulkar scoring his 100th international ton is certainly a prospect. I hope that doesn't happen. I hope he scores it in his next series,' said Clarke.

'He has been an unbelievable player for such a long period of time. I really enjoy watching him bat. If he does score the 100th century, he deserves every bit of credit and applause,' he added.

Suspect in Ohio Amish attacks to plead not guilty (AP)

CLEVELAND ? A lawyer for one of 12 people charged in beard-cutting attacks on fellow Amish in Ohio said Wednesday that he will plead not guilty to federal hate crime charges and that the law itself may be challenged.

The attorney, Dean Carro, represents Lester Miller, 37, a nephew of the alleged ringleader in the attacks linked to a breakaway Amish group and a feud over church discipline.

Carro said the case could lead to questions challenging the hate crimes law.

Referring to the hate crimes statute in the indictment, Carro said, "The questions that are going to be asked are, really, the power of Congress to create such a statute. That's an interesting question."

The hate crime charges were filed under a law that makes an attack a federal crime if it was committed because of actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation or disability.

The charges announced Tuesday include conspiracy, assault and evidence tampering in what prosecutors say were hate crimes motivated by religious differences.

Five attacks involved cutting women's hair and men's beards and hair. The Amish believe the Bible instructs women to let their hair grow long and men to grow beards and stop shaving once they marry.

The attorney for another defendant said Tuesday that his client would plead not guilty. There was no immediate comment on behalf of the other defendants.

The alleged ringleader, Samuel Mullet Sr., 66, of Bergholz in eastern Ohio, told The Associated Press in October that he didn't order the hair-cutting but didn't stop his sons and others from carrying it out.

Mullet said the goal was to send a message to other Amish that they should be ashamed for the way they were treating Mullet and his community.

Ohio has an estimated Amish population of just under 61,000 ? second only to Pennsylvania ? with most living in rural counties south and east of Cleveland.

Let the music begin again in Afghanistan

Overcoming cultural hurdles and decades of war, a music institute in Afghanistan professionally trains youths and street children.

? A local, slice-of-life story from a Monitor correspondent.

?Let the music begin again

?If music programs are the first to go when funding is tight in American schools, it?s not difficult to imagine how quickly they vanished amid three decades of war in Afghanistan. Though fighting continues, in the relatively peaceful capital city a small school of about 150 students is the nation?s first concerted effort to reestablish a music program.

?The institute began two years ago, offering primary education up to the Afghan equivalent of an associate degree in music performance.

??The music sector in Afghanistan is practically a blank page,? says Ahmad Nasir Sarmast, founder and director of the Afghan?istan National Institute of Music. ?Afghanistan needs many orchestras and ensembles that do not exist in the country. Afghanistan doesn?t even have a national orchestra.?

?The school aims at a cross section of pupils: Half the slots are reserved for orphans or street children. Tuition, lunch, uniforms, and transportation are free. About one-quarter of the students receive a $27 monthly stipend.

?Aside from the dearth of professionally trained musicians, the institute must also work to overcome cultural hurdles. The Taliban regime banned music. Though few Afghans share that harsh view of music, it remains a tense issue in parts of the country. Over the past year, Jalalabad, one of the largest cities in Afghanistan, has seen a rash of music store bombings. And even Afghans who enjoy music tend to look down on professional musicians.

??Everywhere, even in Europe, music has disappeared for a time, but then it rose again. It happens,? says Fareed Shefta, a clarinet teacher at the institute.

The Daily life Insurance plan Quote Business is Booming, but is ...

The everyday life insurance quotation small business on the web is booming. Not just are everyday living insurance coverage agents quoting a more various portfolio of organizations, but individuals can also be now ready to quote existence insurance policies on the web for their selves. With this write-up, I?ll evaluate the impact of the lifestyle insurance policy on line quote on the insurance coverage sector, the insurance policy broker, and the consumer in search of insurance.

Within the not so distant previous, lifestyle insurance plan was sold, not bought. The standard agent would travel door to door, network regionally, and maybe meet with probable policyholders for dinner at their property. The ?debit? agent was also a typical job. These agents would actually go to their shoppers and gather the top quality on the weekly basis. The everyday life insurance plan quote arrived from the individual back then, not a pc.

These days, buyers can log on for a lifestyle insurance policy quote. The ability to readily examine the expense of lifestyle insurance plan among 100s of lifestyle insurance plan organizations has dramatically altered the setting.

The largest effect into the insurance business may be the indisputable fact that the expense of protection has reduced substantially. This is great for your customer, but is in result shutting smaller companies down as the claims to revenue ratio is converging.

A further impression is the indisputable fact that when people get an internet based lifestyle insurance quote, they are really seldom coached concerning what exactly is the higher deal for them. Normally instances, term everyday life insurance coverage may be the only product that they are featured. The client just isn?t staying instructed concerning the benefits of entire everyday living insurance or the flexibility of universal life insurance plan?they?re frequently just granted a phrase existence insurance policies quotation as asked for.
